Anyone who has been to our Broadway office may have noticed a poster on the wall with a quote from Albert Einstein, I am a big quote guy and think Albert Einstein is a genius with his life philosophies.
The famous quote is
“Life is like a bicycle. In order to keep balance you must keep moving”.
There are many ways to interpret this. Growing emotionally, intelligently but in this context let’s focus on the physical. Pain is crippling. It changes the way you move, the way you act, how you feel, your relationship with others, it affects your job. It can go on and on. We as PT’s work with people with pain all day and see firsthand their struggles.
The only thing we do not want our patients to feel is helpless and defeated. So when a patient tells they had a lot of pain over the weekend and so they just rested, I get upset. The worst thing you can do Is let the pain completely cripple you to the point where you are not moving at all.
There is always some movement you can do even when you are in severe pain. Doing exercise and movement will give you some power and control over the pain and help your ability to problem solve. It will help you emotionally and may even reduce the pain. If you are having knee or foot pain, try some upper body, core or mid back exercises on a bed. If your shoulder hurts, you can go for a walk, try a exercise bike or do hip mvts lying down.
Pain in your body’s way of expressing something is wrong. Our obligation to our body is to acknowledge and act. Move in ways you can. There is something you can do, you just need to problem solve.
